RCC was started by Cornerstone Chapel of Pompton Plains, NJ in November, 1994. Cornerstone had a vision to plant daughter churches since its beginning in 1990. After only two years Cornerstone Chapel took on its first seminary intern, Don Flynn, and began to look forward to its first daughter church plant. After much prayer, the target area became Nutley, NJ and Don Flynn was the designated church planter. As it turned out, Don had grown up nearby in Belleville, NJ and would be coming home to accomplish what had been burning in his heart for some time. The vision that the Lord gave him was for a church planting church that was based on a cell group philosophy. The Lord had been preparing the hearts of others as well who would soon connect with this vision.
Approximately 25 people responded to the call to be part of the core group. Some made a temporary commitment and others were in it for the long haul. On opening day, November 13, 1994, after a lot of hard work, there were 220 people in attendance. It was an exciting and invigorating day. Following a few set-backs over the next several months, the church grew steadily. The growth has continued, both physically and spiritually, as we seek to implement the vision that God has given us. We are excited to find out that many people are responding to the quest for a church that is relevant and real. We see ourselves as one of the many churches in this area that God is using for His glory.
